This manual will guide you through the process of replacing a battery in an iPhone 7 and give its battery the power to last as if new.
To avoid damaging the display cables, this manual instructs you to remove the display part from the device. However, if you are willing to risk this, you may skip this part and move directly to the battery replacement part.
For optimal performance after replacing the battery, calibrate the new battery: discharge it under 10% and then recharge without interrupting to 100%.
Opening the iPhone 7 display will compromise its waterproof seals. If you do not replace them, the device will be functional, but no longer waterproof.
Replacement parts for iPhone 7 can be found on our e-shop in the replacement parts section. If you are interested in a service task for your iPhone 7, visit one of our branches and we will arrange a same-day repair.
Step 1 Pentalobe screws
Before you begin, discharge your iPhone battery below 25%. A charged battery can catch fire and/or explode if punctured.
- turn off your iPhone
Opening the iPhone's display will compromise its waterproof seals. If you don't replace it, your device will work, but it won't be waterproof anymore.
- remove the two 3,4 mm Pentalobe screws from the bottom of your iPhone
Step 2 Suction cup
Heating the lower edge of the iPhone will help soften the adhesive by which the display is secured, which will make it easier to open.
- heat the bottom edge of the device using a hairdryer for approximately 1 minute
- this will soften the adhesive located underneath
- place the suction cup on the bottom half of the display, just above the home button
Make sure, that the suction cup does not cover the home button, which could cause formation of an air bubble.
Step 3 Opening the device 1
- pull the suction cup and create a small gap between the display and rare case
- insert the flat side of the spudger into the gap
- the watertight adhesive securing the display in place is very strong and creating this gap requires a significant amount of force. If necessary, use an upwards-downwards movement to loosen the display, and create enough space for the spudger
- pull the suction cap and create a small gap between the display and rare case
Step 4 Opening the device 2
- move the spudger all the way to the left side of the iPhone, by moving it up and down towards the volume control buttons
Do not move it all the way towards the top edge of the phone, as this could damage the plastic clips which secure the display.
- repeat the same movement on the right side of the device to separate the display from the rare case
- pull the suction cup to lift the display and open the iPhone
Do not lift the display more than 10° angle as this part is still attached to the rare case by thin ribbon cables, which it could damage.
- remove the suction cup
Step 5 Opening the device 3
- insert the pick into the gap on the top edge of the iPhone to break up the remaining adhesive
Be careful not to damage the plastic clips on the top edge of the phone.
- carefully pull the opened display downwards, to disengage it from the clips on the top of the device
- open the iPhone by tilting it to the right, as when opening a book
Do not attempt to fully separate the display part yet, as it is still connected by fragile ribbon cables.
Step 6 Disconnecting battery
- remove the four Y000 screws, which secure the lower connector bracket
- three 1,2 mm screws
- one 2,4 mm screw
- during reassembling, make sure that you return the same screws to the exact place where they came from. This is the only way to avoid damaging the device
- remove the lower connector bracket
Step 7 Disconnecting the battery connector
- use the tip of the spudger tool to lift the battery connector from its place on the motherboard
Tilt the connector cable away from the device, to avoid electrical contact with other parts.
Step 8 Display part
- use the tip of a spudger and lift the battery connector from its place on the motherboard
- tilt the connector cable away from the device, to avoid electrical contact with other parts
- before you continue, make sure the battery is disconnected
- use a spudger or a fingernail and disconnect lower display connectors by prying them straight up from the motherboard
- when re-connecting the cables, press down on ends until you hear them click back into place
- do not press them down in the middle, as this could permanently damage them
- if you have white lines running through the display, or lack of complete lack of touch response, make sure that this cable is re-connected correctly
Step 9 Removing the front panel sensor assembly connector
- remove the two 1,3 mm Philips screws, which secure the front panel sensor assembly connector bracket
- remove the bracket
- disconnect the panel from its place on the motherboard and remove from the phone
- separate the display assembly from the rest of the phone
Step 10 Barometric vent
- remove the two 1,9 mm Philips screws, which secure the barometric vent to the rare case
- remove the vent from the device
Step 11 Taptic Engine
- use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the Taptic Engine from the motherboard
- remove the three 1,6 mm Philips screws, which secure the Taptic Engine
- remove the Taptic Engine from the device
Step 12 Battery
- use tweezers with blunt tips to find and pull out the ends of two tapes, which stick the battery to the rare case
Step 13 Removing the tapes
Hold the adhesive tapes straight while pulling them out to avoid them from rolling and twisting. If they stick to something or to each other, they might rip.
Pull the ends of the adhesive tapes using your fingers and one by one pull them from under the battery towards the bottom of the iPhone.
- pull slowly and consistently, until the tapes are completely removed from under the battery
- pull in a maximum 60° angle or less
The tapes have a tendency to return to their original length. If it slides out from your fingers, grab it and continue pulling.
- when pulling out the second tape, hold the battery down so it does not jump out of the device as under pressure
- if you managed to remove both tapes, skip the next step
Step 14 If you were not able to remove both tapes
- use a hairdryer to gently heat up the rare case under the battery
Overheating the iPhone may cause battery fire.
- after heating up, slide a thin plastic card under the battery and use it to gently cut the remaining adhesive, to make it easier to remove the battery
Do not use too much force to push and do not slide in the card in the area between the volume buttons, you could damage the cable, which connects it with the motherboard. Keep the card as flat as possible to avoid breaking the battery.
Step 15 Removing the battery
- remove the battery from the phone
Apply new double-sided adhesive tapes on a new battery and install it into the phone by reversed process.
